How to celebrate World Oceans Day 2021 in South Africa

Posted by Anita Froneman on 8 June 2021

South Africa is fortunate to have a 3200km-long coastline, 48 Blue Flag beaches and an incredible diversity of marine life. We have so many reasons to celebrate World Oceans Day 2021 on June 8. Here’s how we can create awareness around humankind’s dependence on the oceans, and educate ourselves on how to use its resources ethically and sustainably.

The ocean covers over 70% of the planet and produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, according to the United Nations. This year’s theme is ‘The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods’ and a declaration to dedicate a decade to ‘Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources’ by the year 2030.

Celebrate our oceans and beaches

We should take some time to celebrate South Africa’s magnificent oceans and beaches, many of which have Blue Flag status. These beaches are awarded the status judged on water quality, safety, and public environmental education.

The Blue Flag programme is active in over 40 countries around the world and South Africa has 48 Blue Flag beaches.

Here is a full list of the beaches awarded Blue Flag Status for the 2020/2021 season.

You can also get in on the fun and celebrate by getting in the water. Here’s where you can go for incredible ocean activities:
