Houses encapsulated in ice in New York

Posted on 4 March 2020

America has been hit with cold weather this winter and images of houses covered in ice in Hamburg, New York State attest to the chilly climate.

Shovelling snow is a foreign concept to us South Africans. While it does get cold in winter, it never reaches the point where an entire house freezes over.

Hamburg in New York is a beach town in Erie county named after Hamburg in Germany. With the winter chill, the town has experienced strong winds, low temperatures and over 5m high waves. These factors have caused the freezing phenomenon.

Homes have been completely encapsulated in ice. While it is interesting to see, the residents living in these homes aren’t sharing in the intrigue. Some of the homes are covered in ice almost a metre thick. What will happen to the houses in terms of structural damage when the ice melts are a cause for concern. Power lines have been knocked over and trees have collapsed as a result of the ice too.
