Home Affairs commits to implementing remote working visa by June Posted by David Henning on 5 May 2023 The much-talked-about remote working visa for South Africa has been in the pipeline for about a year, with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) committing to finalising the legal process by the end of next month. The Standing Committee on Finance, Economic Opportunities and Tourism were told on Wednesday by the acting deputy director-general on immigration that the state’s law advisor approval process was underway. In his 2022 State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Cyril Ramaphosa mentioned exploring new visa categories, such as start-up and remote working visas. He touched on the topic again in his 2023 SONA. The remote working visa was a hot topic at Wednesday’s meeting, where the Standing Committee learned the DHA is completing its implementation plan. The DHA said they were on target to meet their deadline and added that the department would announce when applications will open as they move through the legislative process and how people can apply. The Democratic Alliance (DA) publicly stated they will follow up on the progress and ‘will write to the DHA in June to follow up on the implementation of remote working visas, including the mechanisms that can be used to apply when applications go live,’ to ensure the deadline is met.
