Holland covers bus stops with plants for honeybees Posted on 11 July 2019 Tags:Honeybees The city of Utrecht in the Netherlands has taken a step towards becoming greener in more ways than one, by covering hundreds of bus stop roofs with plants. Independent reports that the city has covered the 316 roofs as a present for the resident honeybees. The shelters are supportive of the city’s biodiversity and help to catch fine dust and rainwater. Maintenance of the roofs is done by workers who travel via electric vehicle from stop to stop. According to Independent, the bus stops are equipped with energy-saving LED lights and bamboo benches. The city has been on a mission to become more environmentally conscious. In addition to its bee-friendly initiative, Utrecht aims to introduce 55 new electric buses by the end of 2019, which ties into its goal of having ‘completely clean public transport’ by 2028, as reported by Independent.
