Government appoints new Border Management Authority for South Africa Posted by Anita Froneman on 25 November 2021 South African government has appointed a new Border Management Authority (BMA) for South Africa, to manage and monitor the movement of people and goods in and out of the country’s borders. ‘It is an uncontested fact that we have problems along the borders. The establishment of the BMA is meant to solve that problem. Now that the legislation to establish the BMA has been passed, it is important to appoint the individuals who will implement it,’ said Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi. The BMA will also assist with law enforcement and the prevention of fraud and corruption on the borders. Dr Nakampe Masiapato is the Commissioner and (former) Major General David Chilembe is the Deputy Commissioner of Operations and the BMA will officially be deployed in 2022. Six of South Africa’s ports of entry will also be upgraded so as to ‘modernise’ them, reports Business Tech. These are Beit Bridge (Zimbabwe); Lebombo (Mozambique); Oshoek (Eswatini); Kopfontein (Botswana); Maseru Bridge (Lesotho); Ficksburg (Lesotho). ‘The benefit for the South African economy is that goods and people will move through these six busiest land ports at a faster pace and in a more effective and efficient manner,’ government said.
