Fuel levy to increase by 25 cents Posted by Anita Froneman on 26 February 2020 During his 2020 Budget speech Minister of Finance, Tito Mboweni, announced a 25-cent-increase in fuel levies ‘to adjust for inflation.’ This increase, which will affect all fuel in South Africa, will take effect from 1 April 2020. ‘Given the fact that many South Africans are buckling under severe financial constraints, such an increase this year will be more than detrimental; it could be catastrophic,’ the Automobile Association said in a statement. The increase will affect travellers who plan to take road trips for the Easter holidays in April, as well as for other upcoming holidays like Freedom Day and Worker’s Day, especially seeing as the prices of e-toll and national toll fees will increase from 1 March. The toll tariff increase will apply to the N3 toll road between Johannesburg and Durban, on the N4 between the borders of Mozambique and Botswana, as well as toll sections of the N1, N2, N17, N12, R30, and R21. Drivers may have to take back roads to avoid tolls and take holidays a little closer to home this year to offset the increase of road travel throughout the country.
