Freediver from Cape Town sets a new world record Posted by Chloe Cowley on 8 March 2022 Amber Fillary, a South African freediver, has set a new Guinness World Record for the longest under-ice swim. Achieved on 5 March, wearing only her bikini, she broke the previous world record of 70m, which she also held. With no weight-belt, diving suit or fins, Fillary dived into the freezing water in Mysutjern, which is south of Kongsberg in Norway. She swam 90m in two minutes and 25 seconds under 40cm-thick ice. Originally from Cape Town, Fillary struggled with years of depression and addiction. Since the age of 15, she has struggled with bulimia and anorexia. In her early twenties, she began to drink and overuse medication which led to multiple stints in rehab. She hopes to inspire others who struggle with mental disorders to follow their dreams. Having a goal has helped her overcome darkness, she says, ‘Don’t let depression and addiction get in the way of your dreams.’ WATCH: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Arve Gravningen (@fridykker_com) Fillary arrived in Norway on 19 February to acclimatise to the icy water and mentally prepare for the challenge. According to Dykking, Fillary is far from done and will be back in Norway in 2023 to try to reach the 100m mark.
