Free Gautrain rides to welcome home the Bokke

Posted on 5 November 2019

If you want to welcome home the Rugby World Champions this afternoon, the Gautrain is offering free rides from multiple stations to OR Tambo International Airport. The catch? You have to wear a Springbok shirt.

According to Times Live, the offer applies to any Gautrain station, to and from the airport, between 1:30 PM, 3:30 PM, 6 PM and 8 PM. The Bokke will land at 5PM.

Jack van der Merwe, CEO of the Gautrain management agency, said to Times Live: ‘After the amazing Rugby World Cup victory by the Springboks, the Gautrain has decided to celebrate this glorious achievement by offering free travel to all Springbok supporters who will be welcoming the team back from Japan at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday, heeding President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call to go and welcome them home.’

The Ndlovu Youth Choir, who have made waves with their performances throughout the country, will also be there to welcome our heroes home.

‘Thank you to Rassie (Erasmus), Siya (Kolisi) and the rest of the boys for making us proud and putting South Africa again firmly on the international rugby map,’ said Van der Merwe to Times Live.

Riders need to travel without luggage in order to qualify for the offer. General air travellers will not be able to use the offer.

Free parking is available at Centurion, Midrand, Marlboro and Sandton stations on a first come first served basis. All you have to do is keep the paper ticket you receive until you return and give it back to the ticket office to be let out for free. If you use your Gautrain Gold or Swift cards to enter the parking, you will be charged non-rail user rates.
