Free entry for kids to Kirstenbosch during school holidays Posted on 11 June 2019 Tags:Kirstenbosch From Saturday 15 June to Monday 8 July 2019, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden will be hosting its annual Winter Wonders Special. Children 17 years and younger get FREE entry to Kirstenbosch and the chance to enjoy an exciting kids’ programme packed with fun-filled activities at the Moyo Kirstenbosch Restaurant. These include drumming, arts and crafts, slime-making, movies, rides, and more. The Winter Wonders Special is a great opportunity for families to explore the most beautiful botanical garden in Africa for less and learn more about its magnificent and meticulously-cultivated indigenous flora. At the info desk, ask about the free 90-minute guided tours, or simply grab a map and go your own way. To begin your adventure, start with The Conservatory – a desert house with a majestic baobab tree in its centre and weird welwitschias, also known as ‘tweeblaarkanniedood’. Then take a walk on the wild side towards the Tree Canopy Walkway (otherwise known as The Boomslang) and tell the kids to be on the lookout for birds and dinosaurs (well, life-sized sculptures of them anyway!) lurking behind giant cycads in the Cycad Amphitheatre. Walking further up, you’ll spot different species of flowering proteas. Near Gate 2, you can see some of the healing plants in the Useful Plants Garden, explore with your nose in the Fragrance Garden and take in beautiful African art in the Sculpture Garden. It’s best to make a day of it, so pack a picnic or head over to Moyo where you can grab a table by one of the cosy fireplaces and feast on the hearty winter menu, which includes favourites such as flambéed kudu fillet, vegan shakshouka and Moyo mousse with a twist. A special kids’ menu is also available. Moyo is located nearest to the Visitors’ Centre (Gate 1) at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens. Kirstenbosch is open every day from 8am-6pm in winter.
