European skies open with 400% more flights Posted by Anita Froneman on 18 May 2020 Slowly but surely Europe is recovering from COVID-19. With summer around the corner in the northern hemisphere, members of the European Union are looking to create a travel bubble that will allow countries to travel within Europe. The easing of travel restrictions will include domestic flights, and airlines are ready for an expected surge in air travel. German airline Lufthansa was the first major European carrier to announce resuming operations in June with 1,800 round trips weekly, according to Forbes. Lufthansa, SWISS and Eurowings plan to operate a total of 70 overseas flights as well in June. That’s up almost 400% on May. Long-haul routes operated by Lufthansa will include flights to Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Toronto, Dubai, Mumbai, Mexico City, Tel Aviv and Johannesburg. The Middle East is also planning to get back into the sky. From 21 May, Emirates plans to resume flights to international destinations via its Dubai hub to London, Milan, Madrid, Frankfurt and Paris.
