Escaped tiger on the loose in South Joburg Posted by David Henning on 16 January 2023 A tiger escaped its enclosure on a small holding in the Walkerville area south of Johannesburg on Saturday 14 January after the enclosure’s fence was allegedly cut. A Siberian tiger. The drama began on Sunday afternoon when the female tiger attacked a 39-year-old man and his dog in the Walkerville area. The dog died after the incident but there have been no human fatalities. The big cat escaped from a smallholding where it was kept with another male, The local community policing forum’s (CPF) Gresham Mandy said. The owner claims that the tiger’s fence had been cut before the animal escaped. The Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark SPCA commented its team was also on the ground and working with authorities to ensure the safe capture of the tiger. ‘Please do not approach the tiger — she is dangerous,’ the SPCA said. It asked the residents of Walkerville and its surroundings to inform it immediately by calling its emergency number on 083 292 5862, if the tiger was spotted.
