Durban mayor takes a dip in the sea to launch the festive season Posted by Jordyn Johnson on 2 December 2022 Durban mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda, donned goggles and a swimsuit to take a dip in Durban’s North Beach on 1 December to prove that Durban beaches are ready for the holidays. eThewini’s water safety has been a hot topic after reports of high E.coli levels from the continuous sewage crisis that began in April. READ: Beaches in Durban closed due to critical E.coli levels ‘We have partnered with a reputable, independent laboratory, Talbot, to constantly test the quality of our water and share the results publicly. This morning, we conducted an assessment from Umhlanga’s Main and Bronze beaches and we are pleased the quality of the water has improved,’ Kaunda told the Northglen News. READ: Clean waters and golden beaches await you on KZN’s North Coast He mentioned that he was also prioritising safety this festive season, declaring ‘zero tolerance on crime and lawlessness as (their) law enforcement officers will maintain high visibility to save lives and ensure visitors have a safe and joyous festive season.’ Despite Mayor Kaunda’s confidence that Durban beaches are ready to welcome holidaymakers, News24 warns that some E.coli readings were still worryingly high a week ago. All E.coli readings are publicly released, and it is advisable that visitors check the readings before taking a dip at one of Durban’s beaches.
