Dubai drops its 30% liquor tax Posted by David Henning on 11 January 2023 Dubai has suspended its 30% liquor tax and dropped its license requirement, which was previously needed to buy alcohol in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as it looks to enhance its tourism appeal. This follows an announcement from two major retailers on Sunday 8 January and will run for a one-year trial period, according to Al Jazeera. ‘With the removal of 30% municipality tax and a free alcohol licence, buying your favourite drinks is now easier and cheaper than ever,’ MMI, one of two major vendors of alcohol in Dubai, said on its Instagram account on Sunday. A 5% VAT will still apply and being drunk or disorderly can still result in a spot fine. These new rules are in line with other social changes implemented in the gulf state over recent years, This includes a shift to a Saturday-Sunday Weekend, food outlets permitted to operate during the daytime throughout Ramadam and the creation of a new family law for non-Muslim expat residents which will allow them to deal with personal stat issues such as divorce without returning to their country of origin.
