The city is renowned for its magnificent beaches, but some are less well-known and hidden from sight. If you’re seeking a respite from the scorching heat in January, consider visiting one of these five secret beaches to escape the crowds.

1. Beta Beach

Tucked away in Bakoven, Beta Beach is a small and secluded location that offers a limited number of visitors. It is recommended to arrive early to ensure a spot. With its breathtaking views of Lion’s Head and the bay, Beta provides a tranquil escape for sunbathing. The boulders surrounding the beach protect the area from wind, allowing guests to soak up the sun without sand getting into their face.

2. Cosy Bay

This petite beach is located across from the 12 Apostles Hotel & Spa and just beyond Camps Bay beach, home to iconic boulders. Cosy Bay is a stunning spot to watch the sea collide with rocks and take a dip in the shallow water.

3. Diaz Beach

A 20-minute walk down the hill from Cape Point, Diaz beach is the ideal place for a relaxing day in the sun. Set up a deckchair or a towel under an umbrella and soak in the beauty of the shore. Swimming is not advisable at this beach due to strong currents that can carry swimmers far into the ocean. Visitors should only go ankle-deep into the water.

4. Windmill Beach

Located in Simon’s Town, Windmill beach is a great place to bask in the sun. The water is shallow and mostly calm, making it a safe spot for children to play in. If you’re not in the mood for a swim, Windmill Beach is also perfect for picnicking, snorkelling, kayaking, and diving. A large number of fish can be spotted in the area.

5. Scarborough Beach

While this beach is well-known, few locals venture to this part of Cape Town, leaving more space for visitors. Despite its distance from the city centre, Scarborough’s pristine beaches, with their turquoise waters, make the journey worth it. The beach is also dog-friendly, with rock pools nearby for children to explore.
