The airline already operates a route from O.R Tambo International Airport to the island’s capital. It is the only carrier to offer a direct flight from South Africa to Zanzibar.

Until now, travellers from Cape Town and Durban have had to contend with the logistics of an early start at O.R Tambo – the flight leaves at 7am.

At the southern tip of Zanzibar's main island there is a small beach with a viewpoint above it. A new camp has just been setup there and, as one of the very first guests, I spent a few afternoons under the thatch enclosure watching the dhows come and go. I now understand a little better the deep love people have for these ancient boats. Their simple shape and design feels perfect. We went for swims in the warm water as the light faded and the sea joined the sky in a smear of oceanic blue as if forming one canvas. If you're going to Zanzibar, go here. It's far away from any crowds and is the perfect little hideout. . . . . . #dhowdoyoulikethemapples #getawaymagazine #zanzibar #dhow #earthpix #wonderful_places #beautifuldestinations #TLPicks #roamtheplanet #stayandwander #traveldeeper

The new Lanseria route is designed to allow more time for those travelling from Cape Town and Durban to catch it as a connecting flight.

The Lanseria flight is estimated to depart on a Saturday at 9.50am and arrive in Zanzibar at 2.15pm.

The return flight leaves the island on a Saturday at 3.05pm and lands in Lanseria at 6.05pm.

The flights will be scheduled according to the seasonal demand.

Currently, a return ticket from Lanseria International Airport to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar city is R8,600.
