Countries implementing lockdowns and curfews Posted by Anita Froneman on 17 March 2020 To combat the spread of the coronavirus, several countries across the globe have implemented a nationwide lockdown. Others have quarantined certain areas and implemented curfews. On 16 March, San Francisco’s Mayor London Breed stated that residents will be required to stay indoors for the next three weeks ‘except for essential needs.’ Other countries under strict measures, including curfews and mass cancellation of events, are Italy, Spain, China, South Korea, Morocco and Lebanon. In the Philippines, soldiers and police sealed off the capital of Manila. Ireland’s authorities ordered all pubs and bars to close for two weeks, a rarity considering that today (17 March) is St. Patrick’s Day. The South African government has implemented a travel ban on foreign nationals entering from high-risk countries as from 18 March 2020. Another measure has seen 35 of the 53 land ports shut down from Monday, 16 March and two of the eight sea ports will be closed for all passengers and crew changes. While South Africa is not currently under lockdown, travellers who have booked domestic flights and wish to change or cancel them can get more information here.
