Cathay Pacific exempts first and business class from masks while sleeping Posted by Anita Froneman on 9 February 2021 Cathay Pacific will be relaxing mask rules for first and business class passengers from wearing masks when sleeping, Business Traveller reports. The Hong Kong-based airline’s website states that ‘We’re unable to accept anyone not wearing a face covering for travel,’ however the company reportedly circulated an internal memorandum saying that this rule does not apply to first and business class passengers when they are sleeping. Cathay Pacific’s first and business class flyers will allegedly be exempted from masks when sleeping. ‘Seats in first and business class are more spacious with partitions, and passengers are exempted when lying flat for sleep,’ a Cathay Pacific spokesperson told Business Traveller. ‘Our aircraft are equipped with HEPA filtration systems that are capable of filtering 99.999 per cent of dust particles and airborne contaminants such as viruses and bacteria, ensuring the highest possible cabin air quality.’ Some cabin crew expressed their fear of potentially getting infected with COVID-19 with this rule in place. ‘Under this instruction, many crew members are worried about infecting Covid-19 after the close contact with passengers,’ Cheung Shu-wang, chairman of the Staffs and Workers Union of Hong Kong Civil Airlines told The Standard.
