Cape Town switches on its Christmas lights for the first time since 2019 Posted by Jordyn Johnson on 29 November 2022 Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis switched on Cape Town’s Christmas lights for the first time since 2019 on Sunday evening, 27 November. Picture: Screenshot Hill-Lewis pressed the button that lit up Adderley Street and the surrounding areas on City Hall stage at 8.30pm, reports News24. There was a crowd of some 80 000 people, who began the festivities around the Grand Parade at about 4pm. Stalls of food and gifts lined the streets, and music performances kept the crowd entertained from the early afternoon, as I Love Cape Town advertised. The talented musicians included Mi Casa, Zakes Bantwini, Will Linley, Emo Adams and Abavuki, among others. Lighting was projected onto City Hall, displaying some of the city’s history as well as festive Christmas themes. This was the 50th anniversary of switching on the Christmas lights, and Hill-Lewis proudly stated that ‘Cape Town is a story of hope for the rest of South Africa’.
