Working from home has become the norm for many people around the world, as the COVID-19 pandemic forced many employees to stay home and continue their duties remotely. This might sound like quite a substantial inconvenience, but not if you’re living in Cape Town.

Remote work Cape Town

The Mother City has made Big 7 Travel’s ‘Best Cities for remote working‘ for 2021, and it’s easy to see why. Cape Town ranked in as the 42nd best city for remote working, followed by Melbourne, Australia, and Taipei, Taiwan.

According to Big 7: ‘Despite having a few drawbacks, Cape Town boasts an incredibly connected expat and digital nomad scene from all corners of the globe.’

Along with praising Cape Town’s well-connected community of digital experts, Big 7 also went on to applaud the city’s unrivalled scenery, landscapes and atmosphere. Of course, ranking in 42 positions on a list of 50 means the city has a few drawbacks.

Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities, Alderman James Vos, recognised the city’s placement on Big 7’s list and was filled with pride for the achievement.

‘If there is one positive from this pandemic, the future of work will never be the same. This puts Cape Town in a prime position to cater to the changing needs of a global workforce,’ Vos said in a statement.

Vos also went on to elaborate on how the city could improve its remote working conditions for the ‘long-stay digital nomads’, as he described them, going on to suggest the city should consider revised rates and ‘home away from home’ type packaging for international guests travellers looking to call the Mother City their ‘new office’.

Big 7’s Top 5 cities to work remotely from are:

5- Chiang Mai, Thailand,

4- Bali, Indonesia,

3- Belgrade, Serbia,

2- Tbilisi, Georgia,

1- Tallinn, Estonia
