It is also the third state to ban most animals from circus performances. According to The Guardian, the two bills were signed on Saturday by governor Gavin Newsom. Starting in 2023, residents in the State of California will no longer be allowed to sell or make clothing, shoes or handbags from fur. The decision to end this inhumane practice has been celebrated by various animal rights activist groups. The bill comes after two new legislation were passed. The first is a legislation banning fur trapping and the second is a ban placed on the sales of fur in Los Angeles and San Francisco. According to The Guardian, Newsom said: “California is a leader when it comes to animal welfare, and today that leadership includes banning the sale of fur. But we are doing more than that. We are making a statement to the world that beautiful wild animals like bears and tigers have no place on trapeze wires or jumping through flames.” The ban however does not apply to used products or any item made for religious or tribal purposes. It also excludes the sale of leather, dog fur, cat fur, cowhides, deer, sheep and goat skin. It also excludes preservation through taxidermy.
