The BBC reports that ‘the cancellations come ahead of a long weekend with a public holiday on Monday and half-term school holiday.’

This bank holiday weekend is forecasted to be the busiest since 2019, before the pandemic. The Guardian reported that the ‘breakdown comes at the worst possible time, with 3000 flights scheduled to depart from the UK on Friday, the largest daily total since before the Covid pandemic.’

Thousands of passengers faced disruption and disappointment upon arriving at Heathrow Airport after the IT problem began on Thursday evening.

The majority of BA flights affected were short-haul routes, such as destinations to Athen, Nice, Paris, and Rome.

A BA spokesperson said on Friday, 26 May that ‘While the vast majority of our flights continue to operate today, we have cancelled some of our short-haul flights from Heathrow due to the knock-on effect of a technical issue that we experienced yesterday.

‘We’ve apologised to customers whose flights have been affected and offered them the option to rebook to an alternative flight with us or another carrier, or request a refund.’
