Botswana issues travel warning for SA Posted by Anita Froneman on 29 January 2020 The Botswanan government has issued a travel warning to its citizens over the growing unrest as a result of violence targeting foreigners in South Africa, according to Pindula News. Human Rights Watch (HRW) Director for Southern Africa region, Dewa Mavinga attributes the tension to the death of a Zimbabwean national allegedly killed by a police officer in Johannesburg on 17 January. ‘The killing sparked Xenophobic violence which is raging still,’ Mavinga said. In its World Report 2020, the HRW stated the xenophobic violence might be due to economic insecurity, poverty, high unemployment and rhetoric by government officials and other factors. Political analyst Lawrence Ookeditse said all affected countries should ‘voice their concerns to the South African government and bring back their emissaries if necessary,’ according to Pindula News.
