Belize to reopen borders in October Posted on 3 September 2020 Belize will be reopening its borders and international airport from October. However, rules regarding tourist entry will apply. Belize, a country in Central America, is known for its Caribbean flavour and beautiful beaches. The Prime Minister of Belize, the Rt. Hon. Dean O. Barrow announced that Belize’s international airport (BZE), the Philip Goldson International Airport will be open for flights from October 1. Belize will soon be open for tourists. This is the second attempt to open its borders, in August it had said it would open but then reversed this call after residents and visitors spoke out against it. Travellers will be allowed to fly to the country and stay at a limited number of approved hotels. These will have enhanced safety protocols which will also need to be follows by tour operators and restaurants. Belize has introduced its own ‘Tourism Gold Standard’ Recognition Programme. This 9-point program seeks to enhance the tourism industry’s health and safety standards by adapting new behaviours and procedures to ensure both employees and travelers are confident in the cleanliness and safety of Belize’s tourism product. The government did explain that these protcols can change at any time, depending on the COVID-19 cases in the country. As such, travelers are advised to visit Travel Belize or Belize Tourism Board or to access current destination information before booking their trip.
