Europe is currently experiencing extremely cold weather this year, with snowfall even landing in countries known for their warmth. Take a look at what these nations’ beaches look like in summer – and what they currently look like with their snowy blankets.

The province of Lecce in southern Italy is known as the ‘heel’ of Italy’s ‘boot’. Torre Lapillo, located in Lecce, has pristine beaches, and in summer, temperatures can reach as high as 40°C. However, this winter has seen Torre Lapillo experiencing the other side of the temperature spectrum, and with snowfall sweeping across most of Italy, the paradise has been turned into a winter wonderland.

Located just 25 km outside the center of Athens lies the beach of Artemida. It is a popular beach for water sports in summer, where temperatures can reach high on the 30°C mark. In winter, snowfall in Athens is not uncommon, but only lasts for an average of 4.5 days per year.

Loútsa, Greece

Loútsa is located roughly 4.5 hours outside of Athens by car and, much like the rest of Greece, it is known for its warm, blue waters. This picturesque beach has also been received its share of the snow that is sweeping across Europe, an extremely rare thing.

Porto Cesareo, Italy

Porto Cesareo is a town in Italy also located in Lecce. It has been named the ‘Maldives of Europe’ for its crystal clear shallow waters, lengthy white-sand beaches and warm weather. The recent snowfall is a rare occurrence for this area, making the snow an extra special sight.
