Another orphaned rhino joins The Rhino Orphanage

The Rhino Orphanage has a new addition after a male rhino calf was orphaned due to poachers.

After several uneventful months, a private game reserve has suffered the terrible loss of one of its rhinos due to poaching. The incident leaves another orphaned rhino, around 4 or 5 months old.

The little rhino arrived at The Rhino Orphanage late on Saturday night, 10 December. He was ‘very unsettled’ and ‘still calling and pacing’ as the team worked around the clock to convince him to drink and calm down.

The carers are monitoring him carefully for gastric ulcers which can easily occur in stressful situations.

The orphanage’s vet, Dr Pierre Bester, has called him Balega, which means ‘to run very fast’ in isiZulu. Bester said that ‘he is proving to be a fiery rhino with a big attitude’ kicking the bottles away when offered to him.
