Activities for SA adrenaline junkies

The December holidays are around the corner and fortunately for thrill-seekers, South Africa has an abundance of extreme activities to get your heart rate up. Here are our some of favourites:

1. Tandem sky diving

Keen to get high? Get a bird’s eye view and jump out of an aeroplane. You can do this almost anywhere in the country.
Skill required: None.
Safety level: Generally safe. Always go with a verified company and obey safety instructions.
Try: Mother City Skydiving

Cost: R2,850 per person

2. Canyoning

This activity includes hiking to the top of a canyon and then getting down again, either by abseiling or just jumping into the water!
Skill required: Reasonable fitness. Mountaineering skills are beneficial, but not necessary.
Safety level: Generally safe. Always go with a verified company and obey safety instructions.
Try: Canyon Adventures Wilderness

Cost: R800 per person for full canyon experience with abseiling

3. Sandboarding

Sandboarding offers a softer landing than many other adventure activities and is great fun too.

Skill required: Surfboard/wakeboard/snowboard/skateboard skills are beneficial, but not necessary.
Safety level: Very safe.
Try: Sandboarding Cape Town

Cost: R450 per person

4. Bungee jumping

Face your fears and take the leap. You’ll either be hooked or proud of yourself for ticking it off your bucket list.
Skill required: None.
Safety level: Generally safe. Always go with a verified company and obey safety instructions.
Try: Face Adrenalin

Cost: R1,400 per person

5. Dune thrashing

You don’t have to go to the Namib desert to play with big 4×4’s in the sand.
Skill required: None.
Safety level: Generally safe.
Try: The Dune Thrasher, in Atlantis, Cape Town.
Cost: R1,200 per person
