A warrior has fallen – game ranger shot dead in Greater Kruger Posted by David Henning on 28 July 2022 ‘Last night we lost a leader amongst our ranger community,’ The Game Rangers Association of South Africa announced after Head Ranger at Timbavati Private Game Reserve Anton Mzimba was shot dead on Tuesday 26 July. Anton dedicated 25 years of his life to Timbavati, who referred to him as a ‘wildlife warrior’. He once said: ‘I’m a hero. I’m not shy to say to myself, that I’m a hero. Because I know that the poacher, before he shoots at the rhino, is going to shoot at me first.’ Prince William, who met Anton, demanded ‘justice’ in a tweet and stated that he was ‘saddened to learn of the killing Anton’. I’m deeply saddened to learn of the killing of Anton Mzimba who I spoke to in November. Committed and brave, rangers like Anton are central to the conservation of Africa’s fantastic wildlife. Those responsible must swiftly be brought to justice. My thoughts are with his family. A fundraising page has been set up by Timbavati to support Anton’s family and his legacy.
