Actor William Shatner, known for his role as Captain James T Kirk in the popular Star Trek-films is headed on a space trip with Jeff Bezos’ new space tourism company, Blue Origin on 12 October.

The 90-year-old will become the oldest person to reach space. His fellow passengers include two paying tourists, (a former Nasa engineer, Australian Chris Boshuizen, and the co-founder of a medical software company, Glen de Vries) as well as Blue Origin’s vice president of mission and flight operations, Audrey Powers.

Bezos is reportedly a Star Trek fan, and even made a cameo appearance in the 2016 film Star Trek Beyond. He invited Shatner to attend the voyage as his guest, according to AP.

The flight will last 10 minutes and reach 106 kilometres in altitude.

‘I’ve heard about space for a long time now,” Shatner said in a statement on Monday. ‘I’m taking the opportunity to see it for myself. What a miracle.’
