Videos of the incident showed tourists rushing to escape from the collapsing column, which sent a large wave over the lake. The victims’ bodies were taken to nearby Passos City, where the coroner worked to try and identify them, which was challenging because of the ‘high energy impact.’ The lake was created in 1958 for the installation of a hydroelectric plant and has since become a popular tourist attraction. Officials suggest that the recent heavy rains, which caused much flooding, may have had an effect on the rock coming loose.
