How to spend the perfect day in Hout Bay Harbour

Posted by Anita Froneman on 24 November 2022

Hout Bay is one of the best suburbs in Cape Town for water activities. Crystal clear waters, exquisite mountain views and a charming harbour. There’s not much more we could ask for, really. Our idea of a perfect day out on the ocean looks like this.

Morning: Keep your cool when kayaking

Cape Town Kayak Adventures

Nothing to get the blood pumping like a good kayaking session! The friendly guides at Kayak Adventures Cape Town will lead the way and you’re sure to spot the resident seals. With a little patience and luck, you might see dolphins too.

If you haven’t had an “arm day” at the gym in a while, this will do the trick. And if you’re going with a partner or friend, let’s just say this is a great communication exercise.

Be sure to pack sunscreen and hats, the African sun doesn’t play around. Pro tip: wear your swimsuit, because you will get wet.

By now, your tummy will be growling. Grab some lunch at The Lookout, a lovely restaurant which, you guessed it, overlooks the harbour. They often host live music and comedy events too.

Afternoon: Your fate is sealed

You can’t say you’ve been to Hout Bay if you haven’t gone snorkelling with the seals. These friendly and playful animals are a joy to observe in the water. Don a wetsuit (trust us) and float around the famous Duiker Island where as many as 8 000 seals live.

The only way to get there is by boat, and we recommend Cape Town Bucket List Adventures because they hand out hot chocolate afterwards. The guides will give you a thorough briefing and answer any questions you might have.

Remember: don’t touch the seals. They are wild animals and though they’re used to human presence, can still be unpredictable. Just observe them.
