Africa’s first voco hotel is open in trendy Rosebank, Johannesburg Posted by Anita Froneman on 11 July 2022 Broad smiles from the valet to the doorman to the receptionist. It’s refreshing to be welcomed with genuine warmth at an upmarket city hotel, where the building says ‘urban’ but the hospitality says ‘small town’. Originating from Latin, the word voco means ‘to invite’ or ‘call together’; something South Africans know how to do. Africa’s first voco hotel in Rosebank only opened in February, but if you didn’t know that, the buzzing vibe inside will make you think the hotel is a generations-old Rosebank mainstay. But you hardly need to leave the hotel, because the in-house gym (24/7), barber, hair salon and nail bar will cater to your every need. Rosebank restaurants like Proud Mary are attracting people from across the city, and Mary, the owner, has good reason to be proud of her delicious food served at the restaurant and wine bar. Her food is simply delicious! The award-winning co-shared working space, Workshop17, offers guests access to co-working and meeting rooms with all the extras you could want, and on-site valet parking means peace of mind. The rooms are impressive too, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the sunny Joburg cityscape. It’s tempting to just stay in and order room service. If you’re keen to cosy up in the plush robes and slippers, you’re in for a treat. The art pieces throughout the hotel add to the regal atmosphere, a telltale of the InterContinental Hotels and Resorts group’s presence. Dining Proud Mary is one of those places where you take one look at the menu and know that you can order absolutely anything from their selection of delectable dishes, and you will be happy. Aside from impeccable service (the waitron and I even shared a moment watching the Springboks beat Wales last-minute during the first test in the series), the glamorous eatery is a destination in its own right. If you’re looking for a memorable dining experience, be sure to check out this gem among Rosebank restaurants. Kicking off with a Cosmopolitan cocktail, I fancied myself something of a film star, casually sipping on a beautifully pink drink. The indulgent breadstick entrée with hummus and nut butter was perhaps a mistake, because it left little space. But I laboured on, and I’m glad I did. The salmon tataki salad was fresh and zesty, and light enough to justify dessert. Then again, you don’t need much to justify going for milk tart crème brûlée. If the breadsticks were indulgent, this was an absolute euphony of my favourite flavours. As for other places to eat in the area, check out this guide to the best Rosebank restaurants! Rates From R2 425 per room, sleeping two. For the month of July, you can get a free upgrade to the next room category when you check in!
