World’s most ethical pub: The Green Vic Posted on 10 September 2019 Tags:The Green Vic, World's most ethical pub The Green Vic in London is aiming to be the world’s most ethical pub. Located in Shoreditch’s Iron Bloom event space, the ethical eatery is here for a good time, not a long time. The Green Vic is essentially a pop-up with a simple yet ambitious aim. The pub encourages patrons to ‘save the planet one sip at a time.’ The bar is traditional in a sense, but maintains the value of planet over profit. The Green Vic will close in mid-September. ‘We believe in choosing the planet over profits and want to create a fun way to give money back to charity and make the world a better place. That’s why we are aiming to be the world’s most ethical pub.’ Staying true to it’s aim, the pub only uses ethical suppliers, such as non-profits or social enterprises. The food is only vegan, but the gourmet junk food version, created by The Grill Green. Beers come from Brewgooder, a brewery that donates a percentage of their profits to clean water projects in Malawi. It also uses Toast beer that is brewed from surplus bread. All profits from this company go toward food waste initiatives, to combat the enormous amount of food that gets thrown away everyday in the UK. In addition, the by-products of GoodWill Gin are turned into cow food. Wheat straws are available to sip your gin. These ingenious sippers are not porous so they won’t turn mushy, 100% compostable, natural and gluten-free. Even the loo paper, hand sanitiser and staff clothing are sustainably made. There is nothing this pub uses that isn’t ethically sourced and made in a sustainably manner. One in every four staff members, who have been called ‘friendly, lovely and welcoming’ on the pub’s Facebook page, are either homeless, ex-offenders or have a disability. This is a nod to helping the local community in which The Green Vic operates. Those who eat and drink at The Green Vic, will be giving back to the planet, rather than taking from it.
