Horizon Horseback Safaris in the Waterberg

Posted on 25 March 2013

For a unique break that’s particularly well suited to outdoor and adventure-loving families, Horizon Horseback Safaris has recently introduced a tented safari camp that brings an international- standard riding safari within the budgets of South Africans. About 300 kilometres from Johannesburg, the luxury tents are surrounded by rocky outcrops and Waterberg bushveld.

I arrived by 15h30 (as requested) on my first day and was matched to a horse that suited my ability and experience before riding to the camp. On day two, you ride on the reserve where close encounters with game such as hippo, giraffe, zebra and antelope are a given.

A saddlebag lunch is served and you can take a dip in a river while the horses graze. Day three includes a hearty breakfast to fortify guests before another ride, lunch at the main lodge and a visit to a local community craft project.

Why we like Horizon Horseback Safaris

Rides are varied and provide plenty opportunity for trotting and cantering. The riders dictate the pace and groups can be broken up, should certain members prefer a faster or gentler pace.

The herd of 85 horses, from Welsh ponies to thoroughbreds and Boerperde, are well schooled and quick to respond to the rider’s cues.

Need to know about Horizon Horseback Safaris

This is only one of the safari options available and all rides are led by guides who are knowledgeable about the fauna and flora of the area.

Horizon also runs a range of fun activities to keep children and teenagers entertained, such as learning how to play polo-cross, jumping and cross country, cattle mustering and swimming with your horse.

What it costs for a Horizon Horseback Safari
