Washington D.C – night photography and wonderment

Posted on 22 December 2010

Washington D.C is one of my favourite cities in the world. If I’m ever travelling to America, I’ll always choose to make D.C my first port of call.

To me, it’s a city that works through silence. It’s a major metropolis, but it’s never loud. It’s fascinating to walk around downtown Washington and witness people go about their ‘big city’ lives, without the hustle and bustle that anyone travelling to any major city in the world would no doubt expect. It’s one of the few places in the world that produces little change in noise pollution between day and night. Which, for me, is quite simply comforting.

For this reason, I love walking around Washington on foot, spending time photographing the famous monuments and beautiful neoclassical buildings that exude the air of democracy you feel when exploring the world’s political capital.

For me, this is best done at night, when the silence and chill of another wintery night it D.C speaks opportunity, both for exploration and for some of the most memorable and enjoyable night time photography experiences you’re likely to have.
