Such sculptures are not your average sandcastles either; these elaborate creations can take hours for the artists to complete, and there are even competitions around the world that celebrate this fun, creative outlet at local beaches. Further up the east coast, Durbanites seem to come out on top when it comes to creating wondrous sandy structures on SA’s pretty beaches. Durban’s Lucas Mahlangu and Siyabonga Duma from Port Elizabeth are two artists that come to mind whose creativity has captivated beachgoers. Cape Town has a slightly different kind of sand artist in ‘beachscriber’ Andrew van der Merwe, a letter artist and designer who takes his calligraphy skills to the beach sands. Some of his works are commissioned, and he took part in the Remembrance of Lost Species Day commemorative event at the end of November this year, where he ‘wrote’ the names of extinct species in the sand and spectators later watched the calligraphy wash away with the tide.
