Things to do at Hazendal Wine Estate in Stellenbosch

Posted by Anita Froneman on 31 October 2022

A world-class destination offering culture, cuisine, adventure, and entertainment for the whole family, Hazendal Wine Estate is spread across the Bottelary Hills in the Stellenbosch Winelands, only 30 minutes drive from Cape Town.

Hazendal celebrates both its Russian owners’ heritage and rich South African heritage. The golden thread connecting the many attractions that Hazendal wine estate has to offer today is this proud fusion of culture, cuisine, and history.

Here are a few offerings and experiences.

Avant-Garde Restaurant and Wine Tasting Lounge

The opulent Avant-Garde Restaurant offers a seamless fusion of modern design and discreet opulence. It is a fantastic setting for an amazing party with up to 80 guests, complete with an aquarium, chandeliers, and a hand-painted ceiling. There’s also a vodka distillery and a wine cellar.

The estate’s original cellar houses the Wine Tasting Lounge, which is connected to the Avant-Garde Restaurant. Although the room was once a cellar, built in 1870, it has been entirely renovated and now combines traditional and modern architecture. An extravagant and sumptuous atmosphere is made possible by a statement bar, an interior fireplace with copper details, and a private tasting lounge that appears to float above the bar.

Tasting options

The Wine Lounge connoisseurs are prepared to discuss the history, terroir, and winemaking philosophy of Hazendal with you. Allow being led to an enjoyable tasting adventure and what the region has to offer.

Along with 23.5 MCC Blanc de Blanc and Blanc de Noir, you will also be provided with samples of Christoffel Hazenwinkel and Hazendal Estate lines. Boards with cheese and charcuterie are available (R95- R175).

See Hazendal’s classic car collection

The Hazendal classic car collection is a little like the olive in a perfectly dry martini – it might not be the only reason why you ordered the martini in the first place, but it just adds that little something irresistible to the mix that makes the entire experience something truly special.

See, the classic car pavilion at Hazendal might not be the only reason you choose to visit the estate, but once you get an eyeful of the amazing vehicles Dr Mark Voloshin, the owner of Hazendal, has collected over the years it is pretty likely to beguile you nonetheless. Yes – beguile. It’s that gorgeous.

For the kids: Wonderdal at Hazendal

The world-class, 18-hole, par-3 golf course at Hazendal, which offers sweeping views of the Winelands, provides a demanding yet enjoyable round of golf for both beginner and experienced players. A high-tech, two-tiered driving range and a junior and youth golf academy with private coaching are also on offer. Indigenous trees and well-preserved patches of natural vegetation honour the game’s fresh air splendour.

The Babushka Deli pays homage to the babushka, a beloved figure of hospitality, giving, and delectable Russian flavours. All three are available at the well-known Babushka Deli, where the vast Babushka Hazendal wine estate menu includes delicious all-day breakfasts, garden salads, and lunch plates that are inspired by the seasons and the best organic local products.

Reserve a seat inside or at one of the cool outdoor tables offering fresh air and panoramic views across this historic estate. Pastries and artisanal loaves of bread are among the selection of freshly baked goods on display at the deli counter. Watch out for the iconic Honey Cake, Apple Sharlotka, and Black Baguette.

The Babushka Picnics are perfect for groups of friends and families wishing to relax together on one of the oldest wine estates in the Cape. Kick back on rolling lawns that are shaded. At Hazendal Wine Estate, you can enjoy picnic baskets that are filled with delectable fresh food for just R350 per adult (R175 per child) and are packed for 2 guests per basket (R700).
