Hiking Castle Gorge with The Johannesburg Hiking Club Posted on 29 October 2013 City slickers with a hunger for all things nature may think finding a fauna and flora fix is near impossible. But they’d be wrong … The Johannesburg Hiking Club (JHC) holds weekly hikes every Wednesday and Sunday and last week’s location, Castle Gorge in Magaliesberg is one of my favourites. The first few strides of the hike at Castle Gorge. Castle gorge is co-owned by Johannesburg Hiking Club. Upon arrival, hikers are divided, according to their ability and experience, into different groups with a leader to guide each one. A shady ascent up the mountain. The trail begins with a shaded uphill climb to the top of the mountain ridge. Though challenging, even beginner hikers (such as myself) should be able to cope with the incline. View from the top of Castle Gorge, overlooking the Magaliesburg. Emerging from a rocky incline to the top of the mountain ridge. Green leaves peaking through an arid path. Though the landscape is fairly dry and rocky, there are some great green views from the top. A view from one of the old Boer War forts. Crystal clear rock pools await hikers for a well needed rest and cool off. Brightly coloured flowers jump out against a grainy charcoal background. Plant life in and around the pools is a vibrant green! Bright flowers lean in from the rocks, decorating the edges of the pools. Tiny fish swim around the rock pools, searching for a sandwich crumb to nibble on. Little butterflies flutter around the pools Once at the top, we made our way to the rock pools for a well-deserved lunch and a dip in the cool water. There is also a waterfall about 500 metres from the rock pools, and the remains of old Boer War forts. The eight-to-nine kilometre hike ends back at the foot of the mountain later in the afternoon. You’re looking at a full day of outdoor activity, starting at around 08h00 if you meet the other hikers at the meeting spot first, and ending at around 15h30. What to pack for the hike Sunblock and a hat Swimming costume and towel Minimum of two litres of water and a packed lunch Camera R40 for non-members Hiking boots (they aren’t compulsory, but they definitely make the experience more comfortable) For more information on how to become a JHC member or for the full hike program, visit www.jhbhiking.co.za/main Find accommodation in Magaliesburg here Related Posts The ultimate guide to hiking Table Mountain: 22 trails 30 May 2023 Walking on the moon: Climbing the Rwenzoris 27 April 2023 Enjoy the best of both worlds: Five wine farms with hikes and tastings 17 February 2023 We’ve rounded up five beautiful wine farms that offer both wine tastings and safe hiking... read more PREV ARTICLE NEXT ARTICLE
