The Richtersveld: wild, remote and wonderful

Posted on 11 August 2011

We’ve spent our first two days here in the Richtersveld, and it’s been everything that I hoped it would. Stark mountains with boulders the size of office blocks, massive sandy plains speckled with spring flowers that only bloom for a month a year following the splattering of winter rainfall. Star-studded nights, with a half moon sliding across the jet black sky. Braais and beers and swims in the cool Orange River … and a hectic walk up to the top of Tatasberg, one of the highest peaks in these desert mountains.

If you’re going to enjoy the Richtersveld, then come prepared. A 4×4 is a must, properly equipped, with plenty of food, water and all the 4×4 accessories. We are staying at Tatasberg Wilderness Camp now, and it is spectacularly situated overlooking the Orange River. But we are really looking forward to our stay at Kokerboom Kloof over the weekend, where its only basic camping, and is one of the parks most beautiful places … that’s if its possible to better everything else we’ve seen so far.

Hope you enjoy the pics, keep the spirit of the wild alive and check ouwhere I’ve been so far on my Year in the Wild.

A special word of thanks to EvoSat for making my Internet connection in the middle of the Richtersveld possible “¦ it’s kinda strange accessing the web from here, but it’s a truly awesome thing.
