Photoblog: dramatic Drakensberg Posted on 24 September 2014 Earlier this year I visited the top family resorts in the Drakensberg region (you’ll find them in Getaway’s October issue) and there’s no shortage of breath-taking views. The enormous mountain range spans several kilometres and the Drakensberg make a fantastic playground – for kids and adults alike. Sit back, click through, and let these picturesque snaps inspire you to plan your next trip. Most of the roads in the Drakensberg region are in great condition, but take it easy – some are exceptionally potholed, like the one that leads to Giant’s Castle. Whether you visit in winter or summer there’s always beauty to be found, like these bright orange aloe blooms. Even the most ordinary sights made for an interesting road trip. The Mont Aux Sources hotel is the only hotel with a full view of the Drakensberg Amphitheatre. Wet a line in one of the lakes. Drakensberg is home to lots of fishing opportunities. Or you could choose to paddle your afternoons away. Bulrushes frame the lake and are home to a variety of birds including ducks. All rooms at the Drakensberg Sun Resort face the lake and mountains – no parking lot views here. Come sunset, rich colours paint the grounds at the Champagne Sports Resort. Even if golf isn’t your forte, go for a stroll on the vast grounds at the Champagne Sports Resort. You won’t tire of staring at the mighty mountains in the Drakensberg. You, the bush and this secluded hut. Giant’s Castle is a KZN Wildlife camp and offers basic huts prioritising privacy and nature. It’s a bit of a hair-raising road to get to Giant’s Castle as you pass through rural areas where tarred roads are incredibly potholed. The reward, however, is worth the perseverance. Giant’s Castle overlooks a cold river in the valley and has various well-marked walking trails. Nature is the only entertainment on offer here, but what more could you ask for with scenes like this? The landscape changes from bush veld to forest to wetland in a matter of steps. There’s little that beats a sunset like this. So, what are you waiting for? The Drakensberg is just four hours from Joburg and two from Durban. Read more: Top things to do on the Maloti-Drakensberg route. Read more: Find great Drakensberg escarpment trails here.
