Getaway Gallery 2014 Judges Posted on 28 June 2015 Judging the 2014 Getaway Gallery is a task best undertaken with a glass(es) of wine. The standard of our finalists was so high that we had to call in reinforcements in the form of two external judges, both highly skilled photographers at the top of their fields. Our judging panel for the Getaway Gallery 2014 Competition consisted of two internal judges, our residing Photo Editor Teagan Cunniffe, Getaway’s Art Director Jacqui MacGregor and two external judges, Travel and Lifestyle photographer Russell Smith and Travel and Nature photographer Heinrich van den Berg. Below you’ll find some info behind those names. R U S S E L L S M I T H I’ve been shooting professionally as a freelancer for 12 years, specialising in food, portraiture, travel and still life. Before that, I was an art director working in advertising agencies. Some of my editorial clients include publications like Getaway, NG Traveller, Fresh Living, Marie Claire, Women’s Health, Taste and commercial clients like Cape Town tourism, Jacks camp (Botswana), Col’Cacchio, Freshly Ground, Spier, and Woolworths, among others. Recently I’ve started my hand at teaching photography and shooting weddings to spread my wings a little. I have met and worked with talented people, travelled to amazing places and seen absolute wonders through my lens. I am one of the lucky ones that do what I love and am passionate about. As a young child, trudging through our forests and climbing over boulders at the beach, I realised that I wanted to share the beauty of my adventures. I started my journey with Getaway twenty years ago, working with some of the best photojournalists of the time. Along with overseeing and envisaging Getaway’s design and layout, one of my primary responsibilities as Art Director is to source images for Getaway magazine to inspire you to travel further – or just to dream. Please dropbox me your images to [email protected] if you have images which do just that. Creative Direction: Jacqui Macgregor. Images: Russell Smith. T E A G A N C U N N I F F E Photography began by accident for me. I’d always been more interested in the drawing side of art, and in need of reference images, I picked up a camera. I haven’t put it down since, and it’s taken me to some incredible places and people. From working in the bowels of ships, documenting the flying sparks of repair works, to the skies above the Makgadikadi pans and the mountains of Peru. It’s given me access into the behind-the-scenes of a side of life we seldom get to be part of. I took up a position at Getaway Magazine last year. It has always been my dream South African publication to work for, and the experiences have only accumulated since. Part of my job description includes putting together the monthly Getaway Gallery, so if you mail something through to [email protected], it’s me who’s receiving it on the other end.
