Pictures: Street art from SA to NYC

Posted on 14 December 2018

Street art or graffiti, an urban creative form of expression, originally boomed in the early 1980s and has grown exponentially since then. These days you’ll find small hub of unique street access art galleries all around the world. If you want a photo with a one-of-a-kind mural, here are a few spots from around the world that will afford you the perfect urban backdrop.

1. Cape Town, South Africa

The Mother City is well-known as a creative hub for all kinds of artistry but when it comes to street art the suburb of Salt River is alive with art. Every year a public art festival is held where local and international artists take to the streets to produce their unique murals.

2. Johannesburg, South Africa

Affectionally known as Jo’burg, this busy, bustling city has its own distinct vibe and creative direction. The Newtown bridge is where some of the best street art and graffiti can be seen. The work of both local and international artists features here and it is a true feast for the eyes.

3. Paris, France

Street art has become common place in The City of Love. Here artists use every inch they can find to display colourful and touching works of art. From the La Villette canal basin through to the lively neighbourhood of Oberkampf and the 13th arrondissement as well as nearby suburbs, street art in Paris has spread itself out.

4. Moscow, Russia

The crazy street art that fills once blank walls in Moscow stands out like a sore thumb in the city that has very little tolerance for this creative art form. If you’re visiting Moscow you may come across a few pieces that have stood the test of time in areas like Tverskaya, Trubnaya and Mayakovskaya.

5. New York, USA

One could argue that street art was born in New York City back in the 1970s when rampant crime and financial struggles plagued the community, which led to the vandalisation of buildings and subway cars by youths in areas like the Bronx and Brooklyn. From the struggles of the city and its people a unique art form was born that now is a part of the city and provides an open gallery to its history simply while walking through its streets. Prominent creative areas include, the Bronx, Alphabet City and Manhattan.

Incredible art on the side of a building I found on my walk through West Village. (Thanks to @droos86 for letting me know that the artist is Eduardo Konrad @kobrastreetart. Check out his gallery – beautiful work.). I had to squeeze my hand through the chain linked fence to get photo without the fence. Swipe to see street view. #newyorkstreetart #streetart #streetarteverywhere #urbanart #streetartphotography #urbanwalls #westvillage #westvillagenyc #newyorkstateofmind #newyorkcity #newyorknewyork #newyork_ig #ig_newyork #madeinnewyork #what_i_saw_in_nyc #icapture_nyc #instagramnyc #manhattan #walk #travelphoto #insta_newyork #color #thisisnyc #thisisnewyorkcity #iphone #iphonepics #ilovenyc #ilovenewyork #muralart #muralpainting
