Improved Garmin technology now uses Russian satellites Posted on 25 June 2013 GPS and navigations company Garmin introduces technological advances to the outdoor range – and it’s very James Bond. In brief, the latest Garmin outdoor units make use of both the US and Russian satellite technology, resulting in faster and more accurate navigation. Garmin introduces technology for improved outdoor range GPS is an American Military System consisting of 24 satellites orbiting the globe twice a day and sending info back down to earth. Of the 24 satellites, three are specific for understanding position and four for movement and elevation. Garmin has now announced a partnership between GPS and GLONASS – a Russian Global Navigation Satellite System bringing up the number of satellites, giving us Earthlings increased information. Benefits of using more satellites GPS + GLONASS used together means finding more accurate locations in a shorter time. GPS used on its own can be a signal which is unstable at higher altitudes. Garmin users will benefit from a quicker acquisition on start-up, and more accurate location targeting. Garmin eTrex Time it takes for the receiver to “lock on” to a position is (on average) approximately 20 percent faster than using GPS only Devices have access to more satellites, better coverage and more accuracy in the data which is fed to your GPS device. This technology can be found in a variety of the Outdoor range from Garmin including the eTrex 10, eTrex 20, eTrex 30, fenix and Oregon 600 and 650.
