Wine and cheese at Fairview Posted on 26 June 2011 Tags:Shiraz Fairview Wine Estate is one of the Winelands’ most popular estates to visit for wine and cheese tastings, and it’s easy to see why. There are various kinds of wine tastings, all well-priced and a selection of fantastic cheeses to taste. There’s also a restaurant for breakfast and long wine-filled lunches. Wine tastings range from R25 for a standard tasting (six wines and a selection of cheeses) to R45 for a premium tasting (for groups up to 50) to R60 for a master tasting: a pairing of eight wines and cheese with olive oil and bread. As a big fan of Fairview’s cheeses, I loved the cheese tasting, which costs R12 a person. I tried new cheeses of theirs that I’d never had before, like Crottin, Bleu en Blanc and Blue Tower, which were all delicious. Fairview is launching eight new cheeses this year – so watch out for them! The deli is a great place to stock up for cheese, preserves and bread for a Winelands picnic. The ‘bargain bin’ cheese fridge has offcuts of cheese which are perfectly fine to eat, but didn’t fit the required weight or size for a branded cheese so they’re sold at super cheap prices, such as R14 for a wedge of brie sprinkled with herbs and paprika. It’s a cheesy bargain. In winter, the Goatshed Restaurant is heated so it makes a cosy breakfast or lunch spot on days when you can’t picnic. In summer sit on the large shaded verandah. The Goatshed offers breakfasts and lunches: popular dishes are springbok salad, chicken pie, meat platters and cheese boards of Fairview cheeses. During winter, there are food and wine evenings at the restaurant where four courses plus wine costs R225 a person. Each evening is themed (Two oceans is on 8 July; Viva Italia is on 22 July; Shiraz and shank is on 5 August and Hunter’s Night is on 19 August).
