Marinated grilled calamari – in honour of Paul, the ‘Psychic’ Octopus. Posted on 8 July 2010 Tags:Germany, spain Seeing as Paul the octopus correctly predicted that Spain would beat Germany in the second semi-final of the 2010 World Cup, we thought we’d honour him (in a slightly twisted way) with this recipe for a sumptuous calamari dish. Ingredients: 1 kg cleaned calamari, tubes and tentacles separated but whole 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 small red chili, de-seeded and diced 1 or 2 handfuls, fresh parsley (preferably flat-leaf), chopped Olive oil Zest and juice of 1 lemon 1/2 loaf of ciabatta, sliced horizontally Method: Score the skin of the cleaned calamari. In a medium bowl, combine the calamari, garlic, chili, parsley, lemon zest, approximately 2 tablespoons lemon juice, and a generous drizzle of olive oil. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour, stirring often. Pour the calamari and marinade into a colander over a bowl. Brush the slices of ciabatta with the marinade and grill on each side over a high heat, until grill marks appear (3-5 minutes). Grill calamari tubes and tentacles over high heat until just firm (3-4 minutes). Dish up your calamari and drizzle with a little extra olive, lemon juice and salt. Serve with the bread and toast to Paul. Serves 4 Update: We’re shocked to read that Paul the clairvoyant cephalopod has been receiving death threats. The Argentinians were so upset when he predicted their defeat that they suggested he should star in a dish of paella. We’d like to make it clear that we’re behind Paul the octopus 100 per cent and do not recommend that you use Paul to make this dish.
