Best airport breakfasts in South Africa

Posted on 21 May 2014

Who better to ask about the best airport breakfasts than Kulula and British Airways (operated by Comair) flight captain Kanthum Naidoo du Plessis, who has racked up 5 700 hours of flying time and knows our major airports better than anyone.

Boost Juice Bar (ground floor)

Dashing between flights, there usually isn’t enough time to sit down for breakfast, so I often grab a smoothie from Boost Juice. My favourites are the Mango Magic and Banana Buzz (both R28). If I want a hot drink, Woolworths Cafe’ (also on the ground floor) does the best red cappuccinos (R18).

Vida E Caffe (Airside departures, Domestic Terminal)

When travelling via Joburg, I go through security checks before heading to Vida for the breakfast wrap with bacon, scrambled egg and tomato (R39). Ask for it toasted. I also love the freshly squeezed orange juice (R27).

Fego Caffe (domestic departures)

Fego’s basic breakfast (eggs, sausage, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms and toast for R49) is as simple as it gets, but it’s good. If you want to be healthy, the warm oats with berry coulis, strawberries, toasted almonds and dried cranberries is just as delicious (R35). Fego makes a mean chai latte too (R17).
