Cape Town winter restaurant specials: La Mouette’s R120 tasting special Posted on 24 June 2011 Tags:Cape Town Six courses for two people at only R240: hard to believe, isn’t it? This is Sea Point restaurant La Mouette‘s fantastic winter special – it must be one of the best-value specials on offer among the myriad winter deals to be had at Cape Town’s restaurants. We started off the six-course menu with a free glass of bubbly. The first course is spice cheese croquettes with avocado puree, polenta tuille, sweetcorn and tomato salsa. Deep-fried cheese this is most definitely not, but it is comfortingly cheesy with superb flavour added by the puree and salsa. Course number two is a great winter warmer: white bean soup with smoked tomato fondue, mushrooms and truffle foam. I never thought bean soup could be so tasty. For the third course, we tucked in with relish to a big piece of butternut ravioli: fresh, melt-in-your-mouth pasta filled with subtlely sweet butternut, topped with mushroom puree and sage butter. Yum. Confit shoulder of lamb with soft polenta, spinach and gremolata is the usual fourth course, but as vegetarians we had the non-meat option of deliciously spiced vegetable korma served with a dollop of chutney. With two courses for pudding, sweet-toothed diners will get excited. I loved the green apple jelly with custard foam and a mini cinnamon doughnut but my favourite course of the evening was a chocolate macaroon, salted almond ice cream and coffee puree. I’m so into salty-sweet puddings right now, so this really hit the spot. The six-course tasting menu is R240 for two people. Optional wine pairing is available at an additional R160 per person. The special, available for lunch and dinner, is on offer at La Mouette until the end of June. I think people get worried when they see ‘tasting menu’ – they think the courses are going to be the size of a teaspoon. While La Mouette’s courses are small you’re going to be pretty full after eating six of them. In fact, I think if they’d been any bigger I would have struggled to get through all of the courses.
