A good picnic doesn’t require much more than a patch of grass, a shady tree and a lovely view – and it’s not hard to find a great picnic spot in the Cape Winelands. Here, in no particular order, are 21 of our favourite places for a pre-ordered, delicious gourmet picnic – from Stellenbosch to Darling.

1. Groot Constantia, Constantia

Enjoy an idyllic break from the hustle and bustle at South Africa’s oldest wine estate, Groot Constantia, filled with good food, good wine, green lawns and great company. At Simon’s Deli you can design your own picnic basket or order a pre-packed one. The contents and prices are subject to change.

Spend the afternoon enjoying a relaxed picnic at Cape Point Vineyards, a scenic wine farm with breathtaking views. Baskets must be ordered 24 hours in advance.

At the gateway to the Franschhoek valley, Le Pique Nique at Boschendal remains an old favourite, with two picnic areas offering different experiences: we’ve mentioned them both below. Boschendal uses compostable biodegradable packaging for their picnics.

Relax in the shade of old oak trees with a picnic laid out on gingham tablecloths at Allée Bleue, while enjoying views of the vineyards and the majestic Drakenstein Mountains in the background. A jungle gym, jumping castle and trampoline will keep children amused for hours while you enjoy a leisurely lunch under the trees. There is also live music on Sundays.

Rickety Bridge offers gourmet and regular picnics, laid out on the verandah, giving you a beautiful view over the mountains.

6. Mont Rochelle Hotel & Vineyard

Mont Rochelle really ups the ante with various picnic options to be enjoyed next to the dam (blankets provided) or at tables alongside a boules court in the garden. Baskets need to be pre-booked at least 12 hours in advance.
Price: R400 (Little Rock), R480 (Chardonnay Basket), R520 (Miko Basket). All contain nuts.

7. Solms-Delta

Upon arrival at Solms-Delta, your picnic will be freshly packed and a guide will carry your basket and assist you in selecting the perfect spot. When available, their tractor and trailer will transport you to the picnic area. You are more than welcome to cool off in the river shallows, so pack your costume and towel. There is no furniture at the picnic sites, but blankets are provided. If you prefer to have your picnic with a table and chair, you may do so at one of their tables on the lawn.

8. Holden Manz Wine Estate

Then meander through the vineyards to the Franschhoek river and find an idyllic spot under ancient oaks to relax and enjoy the slow flow of the day. Bookings must be made 24 hours in advance.

Otherwise, the picnic pods are the perfect escape for your small group or family party, with tables seating up to 12 people in shaded comfort.

Price: R200 per person, R400 per double bag for two people and R600 per double bag for three people. A refundable deposit of R50 per person is to be paid in advance and will be repaid when jars and cutlery from picnic are returned. Vegetarian and Halaal baskets are available on request.

You can also book a braai basket and cook your own meal over vine wood fires.

With its rolling lawns, tranquil lakes, willow trees and hectare upon hectare of vineyards, Rhebokskloof is one of Paarl’s most beautiful farms. They also offer trampolines, a jungle gym, jumping castles, free pony rides and more to keep the kids entertained. Orders must be placed a day in advance.

Only an hour’s drive from Cape Town, Groote Post offers a rustic and rural atmosphere with undulating hills and vast open spaces. There are also game drives, nature walks and a country market on the last Sunday of each month. The picnic meals are served on platters. Orders must be made at least 48 hours in advance.

20. Klein River Cheeses, Stanford

Picnics can be enjoyed on the banks of the tranquil Klein River; under the trees on the extensive lawns; or on the veranda of the beautifully renovated deli-style Picnic Shed at Klein River Cheeses. Choose one of their gourmet picnic lunches, or create your own picnic. Klein River provides everything including cheese boards, blankets, wine glasses and cutlery.

21. Viljoensdrift, Robertson

At Viljoensdrift, you can take a boat ride on the Breede River, lay your blanket on its banks or simply sit on the deck. Picnics consist of an array of breads, cold meats, påté, preserves, simple snacks, sweets and seasonal salads from their ‘choose-your-own’ selection. Baskets are packed for two or three people each with fully biodegradable and compostable utensils.
