A brew with a view: The 2012 Clarens Beer Festival Posted on 6 February 2012 Tags:lesotho, South Africa 2011 was an exciting year for beer lovers in South Africa. Breweries opened, beer pairings blossomed and a slew of festivals ensured you got your hop fix, wherever you were. Luckily, 2012 is set to be an even bigger year for beer buffs and now the new-year hangover has faded, it’s festival time once more. A couple of events have already passed but the season really kicks off in Clarens – a town where you’re guaranteed a view with your chosen brew. Situated in the Free State, on the edge of Lesotho, Clarens in known for its artists, its scenic beauty, its chilly winters and of course, for its brewery, serving a range of beers and ciders. Clarens Brewery founders Stephan and Natalie Meyer, along with local restaurateur, Simon Kerr are the driving force behind the Clarens Beer Festival, now in its second year. The debut festival was a roaring success and this year over 20 brewers hailing from no less than four provinces will be peddling their wares from tents set up on the Clarens Village Square. Expect German-style eats, live local entertainment and of course, you can expect some superlative beer. More than 50 different beers in fact, ranging from light ales for summer supping, to hop-loaded APAs and warming stouts – just in case an evening chill sets in. And for those who think they’ve seen (and drunk) it all, keep an eye out for two new breweries showcasing their beers alongside old (and not-so-old) favourites like Nottingham Road, Cockpit, Mitchell’s and of course, the Clarens Brewery. If you’re heading to the festival, let me know – it would be wonderful to meet up over an ale or two! The 2nd Clarens Brewery takes place on Saturday, 25 February from 10h00 to 18h00 in the Village Square. The R70 ticket fee includes a commemorative glass (no plastic cups – yay!) and five free tasters.
