From Mopani Worms to Magege: 6 Must-try foods in Limpopo Posted by Tsoku Maela on 12 May 2023 Are you planning a trip to Limpopo, the northern province of South Africa? Don’t forget to add traditional cuisine to your list of things to experience. Though Limpopo is not widely known for its cuisine, it has a few hidden gems that are worth trying. Here are six traditional dishes you should not miss. 1. Chicken Feet and Cow Heels South African township delicacy, cooked chicken feet or walkie talkies with onion and sauce At a village just outside Magoebaskloof, local legend David Letsoalo invited us to his home for a traditional lunch. Prepared by his wife, Mary, we were served plates stacked high with chicken feet, cow heels, giblets, and tripe. The sides of samp, pap, peanuts, and beans were delicious. Although it may take a while to get used to the gelatinous texture of the meat, it is an experience you do not want to miss. 2. Mopani Worms Mopane worms are a popular food in Namibian and Sub-Saharan African cuisine. Mopani worms are one of the most popular alternative snacks in South Africa and are a primary source of protein for many who live in the furthest northeastern parts of the country. The dried version is the most palatable and crunchy, yet fleshy. The salty sting on the tongue is satisfying and a treat for anyone with a savoury tooth. 3. Magege – Roasted Termites View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mariette Du Toit-Helmbold (@mariettedth) Roasted termites are a well-loved delicacy in Limpopo. Termites are traditionally harvested by dipping a stem of dried grass into a mound of earth to fish out clusters of these greedy insects. The catch is then prepared as a relish to serve with pap or roasted and served as a snack. Roasted magege is crunchy, and salty, and once you have forgotten what it is you are eating, it becomes moreish. 4. Umqombothi brewing traditional African beer, in a ceramic pot, the beverage already fermenting This traditional home-brewed beer, made from maize, maize malt, sorghum malt, yeast, and water, has a sour taste and a creamy texture. The beer is served in a clay pot and sent around the circle in an act of hospitality. Although an acquired taste, it is a must-try for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the local culture. 5. Ceasar’s Roadside Chicken View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mariette Du Toit-Helmbold (@mariettedth) Looking for the best flame-grilled chicken in South Africa? Visit Ceasar’s Roadside Chicken in Mbhokota, a village along a bumpy road of which we didn’t catch the name. The freshly braaied wings and thighs are a reward for the taste buds after an activity-packed morning on the Ribola Art Route. 6. Venison Limpopo is known for its wildlife, and it’s no surprise that venison is a popular dish. You can find it in most restaurants, but for an authentic experience, try it at the Leshiba Wilderness Reserve. The kudu fillet is juicy and flavourful, and the mopane worms are a tasty side dish.
