Dive with the Marine Megafauna Foundation in Mozambique

Posted on 29 November 2018

The Marine Megafauna Foundation (MMF), a research centre and conservation charity headquartered in Tofo, Mozambique, will be offering unique marine expeditions next year.

The organisation operates mainly in the Americas, Western Indian Ocean and Southeast Asian waters, and works to protect the oceans’ megafauna – large marine species such as sharks, rays, marine mammals and turtles.

Their latest project is called MEGA Expeditions and involves a marine diving adventure in Mozambican waters that will launch in 2019. The MMF’s project tagline is ‘Go Deeper’ and prospective participants will get to partner with a marine biologist as a diving buddy.

The dives will only take place in June (15-23) and August (17-25) next year, which may seem far away, but you’ll want to start saving: the expeditions are geared towards the foreign market, with costs listed in British pounds from £2,550 per diver – that’s just over R44,000. This unique experience promises to be the adventure of a lifetime and presents divers with the rare opportunity to make a valuable contribution to marine biology conservation.

The cost of the trips will benefit the foundation’s conservation efforts, and the maximum of eight participants per diving trip will engage with marine life over 5-6 days in 11-13 dives between Vilanculos and Tofo. Participants in the expeditions will learn how to interact with marine animals, will be privy to informative conservation presentations, and will even get to assist marine biologists with their field work.
